I also believe that politicians who may publicly be “against” gay marriage be privately fine with it, but need to do so to appeal to moderates. It is a game that has to be played. Also, Obama was against Prop 8, even though VERY misleading literature was sent saying that he supported it right before the election. We even got it at my house, addressed to someone who used to live there. Even I had to take a look at it twice.

I think the passing of Prop 8 is a more telling sign that money can buy you nearly anything you want, not so much an indication of how bigoted our citizens are. I think that flyer plus the misleading TV ads contributed to its passing.

But no matter, the ACLU has already sued to get it overturned. Looking forward to that day.

Although Obama is officially opposed to same-sex marriage, he does say in his 2006 book The Audacity of Hope that:

“It is my obligation, not only as an elected official in a pluralistic society but also as a Christian, to remain open to the possibility that my unwillingness to support gay marriage is misguided…and that in years hence I may be seen as someone who was on the wrong side of history.”

He also voted AGAINST the 2006 Marriage Protection Amendment which proposed an amendment to the Constitution that would ban gay marriage.

Change comes slow, obviously. We can whittle it down and make bigger and better things happen. It’s not going to do so overnight.
