Rainy Day Linkage

I’m experimenting with a bunch of different Wordpress themes so if you come by and see things out of whack, that is just me trying out different things. The Buzzfeed link has me revved up and ready to go and DRIVE TRAFFIC, so I am doing some experimenting with StumbleUpon and trying to find blog directories. Does anyone actually use blog directories besides Technorati? I guess we will find out!

On the non boring/dork tip, here are some things:

I Blame The Patriarchy

My friend Meave linked to this blog on her Twitter and I’ve spent a lot of the past two days reading through her blog and comments. And I reacted the way you can imagine a boy crazy straight girl like me would react to a radical feminist lesbian blog. I think: what a bummer, dude. And then I click back to Jezebel, my safe feminist haven. And then I think: Am I a feminist? I’ve always thought I was one, but maybe I am not. Am I participating in my own oppression because I enjoy having sex with men and enjoy uncomfortable lingerie and going to strip clubs? And not just sex, I rather enjoy the company of dudes. I don’t think all heterosexual sex is rape and I don’t think every single man is a rapist. Someone answer me, please. I am having an identity crisis.

Nancy Boy

I am doing my laundry right now and using the Nancy Boy detergent and my laundry room (yes, I have a washer and dryer in San Francisco!!) smells like delightful lavender. You can forget how cheap your clothes are when you are bathing them in such luxurious scents. I also recommend Nancy Boy’s tingly soap, for other reasons.

And finally, I know I am a few weeks behind on this one, but I finally did it. I finally watched Heidi Montag’s video. And I’ll never be the same again. Neither, I think will you:

Coupla things: I don’t think feminist equals militant man hating bra burner. I will always consider myself a feminist, but my definition of feminism (which I do think is the basic idea) is that women are not inferior to men on the basis of their gender. And really, anyone whose knuckles aren’t dragging on the ground should think that.

Which brings me to…the Montag video! The whole Hills shit is kind of beyond me and yet I am semi-fascinated. I don’t care if they had zero budget. They could have Third World kind of debt and it still wouldn’t excuse that shit. It kind of blows my mind, because I think, did Heidi and Spencer really think that was any good? Did she really think her fake tatas would distract me from her horrible dancing/singing? Is this really some sort of brilliant scheme that they’re going to make work in their favor?

And then I remember that they’re morons.

I cannot watch that Heidi Montag video! The clips I’ve seen on TV are already far too much!

It’s not necessary to agree with every opinion espoused on one radical feminist’s blog to be a feminist.

However, I don’t think Jezebel is especially feminist. It’s too locked into the patriarchal paradigm to truly criticize it, and so it rings false to me. If the tabloids and the ladies’ mags are so stupid, why pay them any attention? Why not boycott, and discuss something else entirely? But there you go; its message is mainstream and easily digestible, and doesn’t require its readers to reflect or reexamine any of their beliefs; it’s femiladyism and it’s soooo great!

Regarding Twisty’s blog, what do you think about the idea that consent isn’t implicit, so that in a rape case the important question isn’t “when did the victim say no,” but “did you, the victim, say yes?” I don’t think that’s radical at all.

If being a feminist required “hating men,” and believing that they were all (potential) rapists, and that heterosexual sex was rape, no straight woman could be a feminist. I refuse to think those are the only conclusions you arrived at after reading I Blame the Patriarchy.

Either way, it makes me really happy that you read it. Really really super-duper happy.

@meave - i don’t necessarily agree with a lot of what twisty and the fellow blamers say, but it’s one of the few blogs that’s really made me THINK and re-examine my beliefs. it’s totally on my RSS reader.

i also completely agree about jezebel and how they are so indulgent in talking about celebs & fashion & that kind of thing, but i think that’s kind of the point, no? some of us want to read that stuff and we want to read it in a way we can relate to, ie, “without airbrushing”.

@Melisser - WATCH the heidi montag video. srsly, watch it.

@tanya - even funnier is a video of heidi singing the song at her birthday party at LAX. she really thinks she’s the next pop icon. ugh. they are such idiots.

I actually do think that all straight men have the ABILITY to become rapists under specific duress/peer pressure/stress/etc. I don’t know. I am reading and loving that blog but we all know I’m more of a lesbian feminist than most lesbian feminists and I probably hate men as much as a person who desperately wants to be loved by one can. Ugh nothing else to say here except thank you so much for that heidi montag video.
